Prescribed Medical Practitioners are medical practitioners trained and empowered to perform certain functions under the Mental Health Act 2014.

Standards and Guidelines

The Chief Psychiatrist’s Guideline and Standard for Prescribed Medical Practitioners have been developed to set out the requirements for senior psychiatric registrars, senior medical practitioners and international medical specialists, who are able to demonstrate that they are suitably qualified and experienced, and who are supported by their employing Health Service Provider, to seek approval to apply the provisions of the Mental Health Act 2014 (MHA 2014).

These guidelines and standards are issued under Section. 547 of the MHA 2014 and the Mental Health Regulations 2015, and must be implemented in a way that is consistent with the objects and principles of the MHA 2014.

Register of Prescribed Medical Practitioners

The Chief Psychiatrist maintains a public register of medical practitioners who are designated as Prescribed Medical Practitioners under the Mental Health Act 2014 and Mental Health Regulations 2015.

The register includes medical practitioners who are Prescribed Medical Practitioners (MHA 2014) by Order of the Governor of Western Australia in Executive Council and will in time include those who have had their status as a Prescribed Medical Practitioner revoked.

The following forms are available to PMPs or medical practitioners who wish to become prescribed. These forms can be filled in electronically and emailed to pmp@ocp.wa.gov.au.
